Why Would You Need A Workplace Mediator?

There are any number of reasons that disputes occur within the working environment where workplace mediation may be of benefit. Bullying is an obvious one but mostly it is not about the good guy and bad guy. We live in a time where the workplace is a high-pressure environment. Those in the public sector particularly, are frequently under-resourced and the demand for their services only ever increases, but this can be echoed in all sectors. So how can this be addressed by mediation?

How Does Workplace Mediation Work?

Workplace Mediation is often offered by HR departments although non-managerial staff sometimes see HR as ‘the establishment’ and serving the managers. Bringing in an external mediator can bring forth open honest communication in a safe environment.

The mediator will speak to the parties in open and private sessions which are confidential and without prejudice. A prime directive for a mediator is ‘to do no harm’! By listening to the the staff involved individually they explore the ways in which the staff can find a path to a place where they can work and communicate constructively. The mediator establishes root causes of disputes and facilitates the process to improve communication and understanding.
